Collective Apathy

Yesterday's events left me confused. Gobsmacked & bewildered too. I don't know whether I should put it down to Mumbai's much-heralded 'undying spirit' or just plain indifference on part of my fellow citizens (includes me as well). Allow me to recount the events of yesterday and I'll leave it to you to decide whether we deserve bouquets or brickbats for such behaviour...

After clocking in another long day at work, I was on my way back home. I boarded the bus (No. 206.... it decides to grace us with its presence as & when it likes.... arrivals are frequently infrequent!). As usual, I was oblivious to everything around me, courtesy- my earphones & a loud Bush number blaring from them. The bus was stationary & was waiting for other passengers to board. Suddenly, I notice a man jump up from his seat & bend down right over to the seat in front of him. Now that struck me as odd, why would he want to do something like that? I get my earphones off & hear loud shouting, something like "There's an unclaimed bag in the bus, a tiffin box in it.... bomb....BOMB!" Now what would you expect next? A flurry of activity, people scrambling to get off the bus, panic on their minds... right? Wrong. Not a single soul moved his/her arse (that includes me too). All but one. This smartarse did move. Parked himself two seats away from the plastic bag, that is. As if adopting this intelligent strategy would save his life. Ok, maybe he would lose a limb or two. But his life would be spared, nah?

For a moment nothing happened. Then the next moment, nothing continued to happen. And we were all in there. Sitting ducks for potential disaster & no doubt, paltry additions to the piling number of victims of terrorism. But nobody moved. The conducter gets off the bus & tries to enlist the help of a policeman (a police station was right in front of us). The good-samaritan-of-a-policeguy attempts to be really helpful by instructing the conductor to go inside-the-police-station-and-lodge-a-complaint-please-thank-you-very-much-is-there-anything-else-I-can-do-for-you-besides-keeping-an-eye-on-the-bus-while-watching-it-explode-plus-I-swear-I-won't-allow-anyone-to-board-without-the-exact-change? If only he wasn't the law, I would have whacked him.

Perhaps I deserved a whack as well. How could I do nothing? I wanted to be useful, but strangely, I thought... no... took for granted, that nothing would happen. Yes, eventually nothing did. Some (brave) hawkerguy took the bag away & our bus trundled along to its destination. But what if the box exploded? I certainly wouldn't be here, writing this shameful tale then. Why did I act (or rather, not act) like I did? Why did the others too? Is it bravado or indifference on our parts? I don't know. But I sure do know that it was outright irresponsible. If this is what Mumbai's 'undying' spirit is all about, then I am highly ashamed of it.

Midnight Meal (Burp!)

Few things amuse me than unrelenting theatrics of obstinacy. And I have to say I found the purrfect bakra! Kya insaan hai... aisa bullheadedness toh bahut dinon se nahi dekha!! Though, I gotta admit... I've never before enjoyed duelling with someone (until 3 in the morning) and watch the person squirm to a point that he is forced to take refuge with like-minded cohorts to get downright personal with me!! Don't you know boy? Thats just plain fodder for me!! This ain't some submissive girl you're trying to prove your so-called-machoism to. No hard feelings, but I thoroughly enjoyed this (mini, hah) debate-of-sorts... Bet you thought I had no fight in me to combat 2 pertinent, one-track minds.... Proved you wrong, didn't I? In the end, there were no winners, but atleast I didn't go bawling, streak-faced to mommy!!

Bring on some more, lover-boy! That is, without mommy by your side to wipe your sad little tears off.

Death & All His Friends

Anyone who hasn't listened to this masterpiece of an album yet... HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK???

Go listen. Now!!

And oh, while you're at it, will you please give some love to Chris Martin & Brian Eno? What a briliant musical duo!

Minutes to Midnight

Forgive me for sounding apocalyptical & doomsday-ish... but signs are afoot that our world will soon come to an end. It won't be some deadly disease that wipes out half the human race or nature's wrath that takes out the other half. Instead, man will kill man. It takes no prophetic prowess to predict this. It is bound to happen. It is already happening.

Why have we all dehumanized ourselves to the extent that we can't stand each other anymore? Satanic acts are the order of the day - murders, honor killings, rapes, bombs.... gruesome episodes greet you with alarming frequency... making you wonder if there's any good left in this world anymore. Why are we so easily querulous? Why are we so hell-bent on destroying each other?

This world desperately needs extensive therapy in anger management. We NEED to calm ourselves down. We need to stop this mayhem & senseless destruction that is leading our world to the brink of complete annihilation. We need to become humans again. We need to start loving again. We need to live again. We need to stop the clock ticking towards a midnight obliteration.

To all the indignant, disturbed souls out there, who think you've been wronged & who think war is the only answer, please know this -

Anything war can do... Peace can do better.

Thank you

Thank you S.

Thank you for listening to me blah clumsily. For the warm hug nevertheless. For wiping those renegade tears off a rainy-face. For telling me I deserve better.

And most importantly, thank you for being there.

Retail Therapy

I tell you, its simply the best remedy that can be offered to a distraught mind... Its liberating, extremely satisfying & presents you with paroxysmal happiness. It also burns a hole in your pocket big enough to see a piping hot mexican-green-wave pizza (slurp!) through.... but who cares! (as long as your deserving salary's credited next month). Out goes the pocket-with-a-gaping-hole & in comes a brand new 'un. For a clotheshorse like yours truly, the smell & feel of new clothes is nonpareil. Almost orgasmic. The slightest urge to shop & I'd even brave Mumbai's fickle & unrelenting rains, the resultant slush & the general chaos around, just to quell that drone in my skull yelling - YOU NEED TO GO SHOPPING, GIRL!

So, to all those gloomyheads out there, one piece of advice (sigh.... another gyaan-baatofyer in the house, didn't we ban them all???) Say goodbye to those blues and say hello to colorful hues (ok.... I sound more like an annoying, poorly-rhyming saleswoman now).

I hereby invoke Occam's razor (Occam's...WHAT!! I've totally lost it) and say - Go shop till you drop. And watch your money go pop!

Yes

When it started we had high hopes
Now my back's on the line, my back's on the ropes
When it started we were alright
But night makes a fool of us in daylight.
There we were, dying of frustration,
Saying, "Lord, lead me not into temptation"
But it's not easy when he turns you on

Since they've gone...

If you'd only, if you'd only say yes.
Whether you will is anybody's guess.
God only, God knows I'm trying my best,
But I'm just so tired of this loneliness.

So up they picked me by the big toe
I was held from the rooftop, then they let it go.
If there's any screaming, let the windows down
As I crawl to the ground...

If you'd only, if you'd only say yes.
Whether you will is anybody's guess.
God only, God knows he won't let me rest,
But I'm just so tired of this loneliness...
I've become so tired of this loneliness.

The Blog Trap

I've never been a a great fan of blogs, nor did I regularly read them. Don't ask me why, but I've always thought they were musings of a self-besotted mind. But then I reason - blogs are not always that; my previous accusation was misguided, perhaps by reading a few of them blogs which had "I/ ME/ MYSELF" strewn all over it. I mean, who gives horse-shit if you've bought a bejewelled comb yesterday, lost a few strands of hair today or will go for hair-replacement tomorrow? And on and on they go.... mammoth blogs that begin with an individual's morning ablutions & end with a goodnight teddy-bear hug. Such atrocity on the poor reader!

This blog was never created to chronicle daily minutes of my life, writing is just a great stress-buster for me. I don't lead a diva's life. Its a simple one. No flashlights, no drunken nights out, no hit-and-runs, no brawls (don't have the bodily construction to even fight one), no procalmations-atop-rooftops, no heists, no sex tapes, no goondagiri (ok, I don't think ANYONE has such an eventful life, except for, maybe that bimbo Paris Hilton.... or apna very own Sallu bhai). I am content with the unadorned, though not unduly austere life that I lead. Low-profile is my mantra. I'm no wannabe, I let my actions speak for me. Thats not to say I'm unambitious. I dream of many things, like others do. But I don't let my dreams consume me. Anything unattained is taken in my stride. I walk on to newer, better things.

So there you go. Day 1 of MY musings/rantings. See.... I've become one of them now.... But I assure you, I won't bore you with lengthy transcripts of how-I-tied-my-hair-into-a-bun-today. I hope I have more interesting & less excruciating matters to write about. (Sure I will... our world is weird enough)!

Until then, adieu! And wish me happy blogging!
